Rebuilding Trust: My Commitment to Accountability and Transparency in Richland County
The Implementation of Glass House Policies Across the Department
My platform prioritizes Accountability and Transparency within the Richland County Sheriff's Department, aiming to rebuild trust and strengthen community relations. I will establish an open-door policy and conduct biennial "State of the County Address" to provide residents with up-to-date crime statistics and progress updates.
To enhance transparency, I will revamp the Citizens' Advisory Council, transferring appointment authority to the Richland County Council to ensure independence and impartiality. This change will remove any potential influence or leverage over council members, fostering true transparency and community representation.
Furthermore, I will relinquish the Sheriff's Department's authority to investigate officer-involved shootings and citizen complaints, instead entrusting these duties to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). External oversight by independent agencies like SLED or civilian review boards will ensure unbiased assessments and maintain public confidence in the investigative process.
In addition, I will implement a policy requiring the release of bodycam footage within 72 hours of officer-involved shootings or citizen complaints involving loss of life. This proactive approach prioritizes transparency and accountability, providing families with timely information and ensuring transparency in law enforcement practices.
By prioritizing Accountability and Transparency, my administration will work tirelessly to rebuild trust, promote openness, and foster stronger community relations within Richland County.
